Why your local trades business website needs a blog

Having a blog section on your website offers numerous benefits for your business or personal brand. We understand that it can seem daunting to write long articles about your industry, even if you're an expert in it!

Can I let you in on a secret? No one really reads your blog. But Google does!

Google is reading your blog with its little robot crawlers. Your blog is to inform search engines what your business is, what you provide to customers, and what areas you serve.

How does this help you? And how can you take advantage of it?

KEYWORDS KEYWORDS KEYWORDS.

You've probably heard of keywords, but do you know what they are?

Google SEO begins by identifying the most relevant keywords for your website or content. These are words or phrases that your target audience is likely to use when searching for information related to your business or content.

Using software to determine relevant keywords is very important. A popular and robust software is Semrush, or you can try a cheaper, simpler version in Ubersuggest. A good software can help you find keywords in your area or industry and give recommendations or ideas for blog posts.

Once you've identified your target keywords, you can optimize your blog posts on your business website, including meta titles, meta descriptions, headings, and body text, to include these keywords. This helps search engines understand what your content is about.

Keywords signal the relevance of your content to search engines. When a user Googles a search term or questions that matches your keywords, your content is more likely to appear in the search results. And then they are more likely to click on your website!

For example, a carpet cleaning business might have a blog post "How to Remove Pet Urine from Carpet." This may not directly showcase your services, but it draws people to you that might Google "pet urine carpet" and see that you offer enzyme carpet treatments.

Targeting the right keywords ensures that your content aligns with what users are looking for. Keywords can guide your content strategy. You can create content around specific keywords to answer user queries and address their needs. This can position you as an authority in your industry, boosting your Google ranking to be on the first page!

In short, potential customers are searching for keywords, and Google is searching for those keywords all over the internet. If they find those keywords on your website, they will show your business to your potential customers.

A good blog can also build up backlinks. These are links from other websites to yours. Strike up a relationship with other companies in the area (not competitive businesses, but perhaps in adjacent fields) and offer to link to their website if they link to yours. Google rewards quality backlinks!

Blog posts can also be repurposed into social media posts. Use snippets from your blog posts to share on Google Updates and Facebook to repeat those keywords.

In summary, having a blog section on your website is a versatile and valuable tool. It can improve your website's SEO, establish your authority, foster engagement, drive traffic, and provide a platform for content marketing and storytelling. Whether you're a business or an individual, a blog can be a central part of your online presence and marketing strategy.
